Every year on May 6, families around the world wear yellow to celebrate Wishbone Day, the international awareness day for Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI)—a rare genetic disorder more commonly known as brittle bone disease. This year, Craft Bank is proud to join the movement.
This day holds a special place in our hearts because one of our Craft Bank team members, Billi McCoy, has a niece, Bexlee, who lives with OI.
Meet Bexlee: The Queen B of Resilience
Bexlee was diagnosed with OI before she was even born. At just 20 weeks gestation, her parents learned that their baby girl had serious complications. After further testing, she was officially diagnosed with Osteogenesis Imperfecta—a genetic disorder that affects the development of collagen, a key component of healthy bones, teeth, and connective tissue.
Born via C-section on March 11, 2014, Bexlee entered the world already having suffered multiple fractures, including her collarbone, ribs, scapula, femurs, and tibias. Because of how fragile her bones were, her family had to hold her on a foam pad for the first few months of her life—ensuring she stayed safe and comfortable.
At just one month old, Bexlee began receiving treatment at Shriners Hospital in Salt Lake City, where she started regular infusions of “Bone Juice” (pamidronate)—a medication that doesn’t cure OI, but helps reduce pain and discomfort. Over the years, she’s endured 40 to 50 fractures and undergone around 10 surgeries, including the placement of titanium rods in both legs.
But none of that has stopped her from shining.
Living Life Her Way
Now 11 years old, Bexlee is a force of nature. She’s got a smile as big as her spirit, a love for dogs (especially her pups Tux and Doox), and a competitive streak on the basketball court—where she can dribble better than most, according to her mom, a high school basketball coach.
Her family affectionately calls her “Queen B,” and it’s no mystery why. She’s confident, independent, and full of joy. While she uses a wheelchair or walker when needed, most of the time, Bexlee moves through life just like the rest of us—only with a bit more sparkle.
Why We’re Supporting Shriners Hospital
This year, in honor of Wishbone Day and Bexlee, Craft Bank is making a donation to Shriners Hospital to support research and care for individuals living with OI. Shriners has been a pillar in Bexlee’s journey, and we want to help ensure that other families have access to the same life-changing care.
Craft Bank is committed to standing by our employees and the causes that matter most to them. Supporting our communities means supporting each other—and that’s something we’re proud to do every day.
Join Us: Wear Yellow. Raise Awareness. Share Bexlee’s Story.
We invite you to wear yellow on May 6 and spread the word about Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Yellow symbolizes optimism and a positive future—perfectly fitting for the amazing kids like Bexlee who embody those qualities every single day.
Happy Wishbone Day! 💛
